Laminate Countertops
Laminate countertops remain a very popular choice for many because they combine a few features that other counters simply cannot match. While they can rival the beauty of their more expensive counterparts, they tend to be much more affordable. When a distinct look on a budget is desired, laminate is often one of the best choices to make.
What Are Laminate Countertops?
Laminate countertops are created using specialized plastic laminate that is placed on top of another surface. The laminate itself can take on a host of different appearances. For example, it might mimic butcher block in design or even marble or granite.
Laminate is created using sheets of what is called core paper and resins. These are pressed together under extreme heat to fuse them together into a single, workable layer. This layer, which is often made of plastic, is then placed on top of another surface, such as plywood. The end result is a countertop that looks stunning, but can cost a great deal less than other choices. Depending on the skill of the manufacturer, laminate can take on almost any appearance desired by a purchaser and any color, as well.
Caring For Laminate Countertops
Laminate countertops can be extremely durable by design, but they are not without their flaws. They tend to share some of the basic pitfalls other counter tops, even granite, have. They do, however, have an extra concern or two attached when it comes to care. Fortunately, this type of countertop material can and does hold up to use and the rigors of time quite well when the right care measures are brought into play.
To keep laminate countertops looking spectacular, it's important to:
- Protect the edges. This is one of the biggest pitfalls of laminate countertops, but it can be overcome. Try to avoid setting anything directly on the edges and take care not to drop heavy objects on them. Laminate can separate from its base if it suffers a perfect hit. Peeling is not at all uncommon, but it can be avoided in most cases.
- Watch out with heat. Laminate countertops are not designed to handle direct exposure to heat. Do not place hot pans or pots directly on top of this surface. Use hot plates or trivets instead.
- Use a cutting board. Laminate can suffer from cutting damage. It's best to use a cutting board to avoid any problems here.
- Clean with care. In most cases, warm, soapy water and a cloth is all that's needed to clean laminate countertops. Try to avoid harsh abrasives when cleaning and do mop up spills as they happen to avoid any staining.
Laminate countertops can marry beauty and affordability. When they are cared for correctly, this type of counter can function extremely well and look good in the process.
